Thank you! East Nashville values children, art and creativity!
Hello Heroes - YES - that's YOU!
Hello Heroes!
It's Lockeland's Art Teacher, Camilla, writing to invite you to fly on over to Lockeland Design Center's 4th annual art show and sale at Riverside Village on Friday, May 6th from 3:30 - 7:00 p.m.
This year's theme is "The Story of Heroes." We've been following the theme of Heroes at Lockeland this school year because of the marvelous stories that emerged from the heroes of the Nashville Flood. It's hard to believe that this time last year our community was sump-pumping, bailing out basements, handing out water, and providing shelter to friends in need.
Now it's time to put on your Super Hero capes and costumes and come join us as we celebrate our children's art. Please don't feel that you need to go out and buy a costume for this. I've encouraged the children at school to think of the POWER WORD they choose for themselves at the beginning of the year and to create a SUPER HERO costume that represents that word with things they find around the house. Some examples or the words the children picked are words like: creative, joyful, loving, strong, smart, and helpful. You will find all types of art that illustrates these power words at Riverside Villiage. The chlidren's art will be in the Music School, Sip, Mitchell's Deli, Wantanbe and in the Courtyard.
As a special treat this year we are excited to share the spotlight with Litton Middle School as they create a live Hero Mural in the courtyard, right before our eyes. You can also preview the mural designed by Andee Rudloff (http://www.chicnhair.com/) that will be coming soon to the of M & M furniture building. The murals are the brainchild of Justin Lett of Eden's Gate (http://theedengate.com/) These murals are a great addition to our community and a wonderful tribute to how vast and interconnected we all are.
Looking forward to seeing you this Friday, May 6th from 3:30 - 7:00 at Riverside Village - 1400 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37216

Art Hero, Susan Hawes - Mrs. Birdwell's third grade class
ART HERO, Susan Hawes – Ms. Birdwell's third grade
Susan Hawes inspired Mrs. Birdwell's third grade class with images of classic comic book covers like these: http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/all-star-comics. Susan even created her own comic book cover which is also on this page. The students were delighted to think of themselves as a comic book hero with their own special powers. They first pencil sketched their design and then spent countless hours meticulously coloring each square inch with bright, bold Sharpie makers. The results are stunning, funny and include a story that tells what you can't see by just looking at the cover.

Item #4 – “Children are Heroes” by Mike Stutz, Place bid with your name under "Comments" Auction Ends May 20, 2011
Mike inspired the students by showing them examples of his amazing hand cut stencils. He explained how you can use old cereal boxes and pieces of mail to create those. Mike also created a wooden canvas using packing materials that were being discarded from his office where he works as a graphic designer.
Using photos of the class, Mike printed them and then hand cut a stencil for each student. The students delighted in using spray paint on the recycled wooden canvas to create the paintings of their stencils. Later tissue paper was added to create layers and the stencils themselves were trimmed and added to the piece along with glitter and sequins.

Art Heroes Jenn Marie - Mrs. McCulley's fourth grade
ART HEROES Jenn Marie and Mike Stutz – Mrs. McCulley's fourth grade class
Jenn Marie "Recycled Critter Creatures" and Mike Stutz "Stencil Portraits on Recycled Wood" both worked with Mrs. McCulley's class on separate days, different projects but the same idea - recycling heroes!
"Recycled Critter Creatures"
Jenn Marie inspired the students to use everyday objects that would normally be thrown away and to create art with them instead. Jenn brought in pre-primed found objects like light bulbs, old jars, computer parts, and wire. The children picked from this collection, glued the pieces together and painted them with brightly colored acrylic paint. The pieces were finished with a gloss sealer and each student wrote a story to explain how their "critter" is a hero.

Art Hero Michelle Fuqua - Ms. Boles' First Grade Class
ART HERO, Michelle Fuqua – Mrs. Boles’ first grade class
Michelle inspired the children to think of the “ingredients” that make up a Hero. She brought in visual examples of sandwiches and printed out a list of words like: loving, helpful and kind. The children first drew their hero sandwiches with Sharpie markers on a colorful background. Next they used brightly colored acrylic paint and a variety of found objects to create texture. Once everything was dry the children went back and wrote the words that make up the “ingredients” for their own hero sandwich. The stories that go along with theses are touching. Some of the stories speak of their real life heroes such as their grandparents and friends.

THE STORY OF HEROES - “Super Power Hero Words - Bam! Pow!”Art Show and Sale by Lockeland Design Center a Metro K-4 Magnet School in East NashvilleART HERO, Katherine Sjoblom– Mrs. McMurray's first grade class
Katherine Sjobolom inspried Mrs. McMurray's first grade class to think of the Super Power Hero Word they choose at the beginning of the school year. The student's reflected on the colors and patterns that would express that word with acrylic paint. Katherine shared scraps of wood from her husband's Kung Fu wood breaking class and the student's painted to their heart's content. They also illustrated their words on a "bam! bow! symbol" to give it more emphasis. The words, the painted background and found objects were added together to create the amazing pieces you see here. The icing on the "Super Power Hero Words- Bam! Pow!" art is the writing and illustrating that goes along with it. The student's stories had extra understanding and often humor to the story behind the art!

ART HERO, Hosanna Banks – Mr. Todd's third grade
Hosanna Banks is an artist and also the Librarian at East High School. I asked Hosanna if she could share her skills for facilitating the Piadeia Seminar in Mr. Todd's art class. Thankfully, Hosanna gladly agreed and created a fabulous seminar using the book "Fredrick" by Leo Lionni. During the seminar the children shared ways in which we are all heroes based on our gentle qualities. The children created a "monogram" for their art using the first letter of their first name of nickname and thought of all the hero words that could go with that letter. They decorated their "Hero Monograms" with all sorts of found objects that reflected their gentle qualities.

Art Hero, Johnnie Downs - Mrs. Kessler's second grade class
ART HERO, Jonnie Downs – Mrs. Kessler's second grade class
Jonnie Downs inspired Mrs. Kessler's second grade class with the timely tale of "Where the Wild Things Are." He led the students in a discussion of how you can't judge a book by its cover and that often even monstrous looking creatures can actually be heroes once you get to know them. After the discussion we reminded the students about a previous guest artist, Alex Pearson and his Monster Friends Poster Series: http://familytreedesign.net/. The student's had a blast creating their own "Friendly Monster Puppets" from fabric, ribbons, found objects and paint. The stories that go along with them explain how even though the puppets might like scary, deep down they are heroes!
Art Hero, Jan Hatelberg - Mrs. Brannan's frist grade class
Art Show and Sale by Lockeland Design Center a Metro K-4 Magnet School in East Nashville
ART HERO, Jan Hatelberg– Mrs. Brannan's first grade class
Jan Hatelberg amazed Mrs. Brannan's first grade class with her story of Empeor Qin's Terracotta Warriors http://www.terracottawarriorexhibit.com/ . Jan visited the site in China on a trip last year and showed us all her photos and share her wonderful tale. The chlidren imagined what type of super power they would use to protect Emperour Qin and picked a word to represent that. The practiced making facial expressions and the used that muscle memory to sculpt that expression in the clay. Once the pieces were fired, the children used colorful acrylic paint to finish the pieces and further express the power word they represent. We hope you enjoy the stories that go along with the "Hero Warrior Mask" that each child has written to go along with their art.
