| This project began with a visit from Carmella The Art Room Chicken and an explaination as to why raising your own chickens helps the environment. The children were delighted to meet Carmella and I think the feeling was mutual! They were certainly inspired by her feathers and the many beautiful details of the patterns and colors of her wings. Thanks Linnae and Carmella for teaching us about urban farming! |

| Ms. Linnae shared her chicken painting with us and taught the children how to draw a chicken using a step by step method. She emphasized shapes and the children were thrilled with their own ability to draw a chicken by focusing on shapes and lines. The children created two beautiful drawings and picked their favorite one to paint! |

The children learned about a monocrohmatic color scheme and experimented with layers of color to make their favorite color of green. While their water color wash was still wet, they sprinkled salt on it. When the salt dried the children were delighted to brush it away and see the white "sparkles" that were left behind when the salt absorbed the paint. One of these water colors was used for the background of the photography portraits, and the other was used to create a silhoutte that was mounted on a black background.

ART you chili? Come warm your heARTS!
Lockeland's 5th Annual ART SHOW is named: "ART you chili? Come warm your heARTS!" This year the art show makes a first time appearance at Lockeland! The Art Show has exploded and joined forces the music and movement departments as well as the amazing Lockeland PTO! There will be hula hoop making in the art room, hula hooping in the gym, yoga in the music room, recycling bowling in the first grade hall, cup stacking in the library and more including a musical surprise. Everything is connected to our "Dream Green" school wide theme. The PTO is throwing down with the chili supper, chili cook off contest, and the ARTcycle Art Auction that will also include BRAND NEW ART from our Guest Artist.
This is a fundraiser for the arts departments at Lockeland. You can help support the event by purchasing chili supper tickets at the door, buying an Art Show mug filled with hot chocolate, purchasing a hula hoop making ticket, and bidding on the art. There will also be a very special crafts table sponsored by Craftville. Craftville worked with the Lockeland Art Club students who have created crafts to sell for their personal profits. Come buy something from the child crafters, they get to keep every penny they earn.
Come on out to Lockeland at 105 South 17th Street in East Nashville and celebrate a night of the ARTS with us. There will be hundreds of student art pieces on display in a variety of mediums for your viewing pleasure. Each class was sponsored by a Guest Artist who inspired the class to create a fabulous project connected to our "Dream Green" theme. All of the Guest Artists are parents at Lockeland and generously donated their time and talents to work with our children. You will be amazed by our community! Come see it all Friday, Feburary 17th from 5:00 - 7:00. Have some chili, participate in the fun and see some great art.

Drawing with Jan Brett's "How to Draw an Elephant"
Children love to draw things that look realistic. Kindergarten children draw with a special joy and ease that makes it fun to teach them new skills. Kindergarteners spend the first half of their art year learning about lines/shapes and how that is what makes a drawing. After lots of practice with various lessons the children are introduced to Jan Brett's "How to Draw an Elephant" video from her website. I have tried several of the Jan Brett's lessons and the drawing that is the most successful is the elephant drawing. The children are thrilled with the results! Before they begin to draw, they watch the demonstration video all the way through. When the demo ends I have them get their Sharpie markers ready and I replay the video slowly stopping with each step and emphasizing the directions. Instead of finishing the drawings with water colors (like Jan Brett does ) we use colored chalk. The drawings are done on the first day and a lesson on using chalk is done on the second day.
The instructions for chalk drawing have to be made very clear. The children use a tissue as a "blending tool." I repeat the instruction of "color lightly" and model what that means several times. I show the children how to layer colors, how to use the tip or the side of the chalk, and how to keep their hands clean with an extra tissue. Once the lesson is over, I have them take their drawings to a clean spot so their tables can be cleared for cleaning with a wet wipe.
Artist Made Ornament Exchange
The Collective Muse is a group of artist who live and work in Nashville, Tennessee. Our backgrounds and our interests in art vary but we all agree that our purpose is to encourage and support each other in art making. Our group has evolved over the past seven years, member have come and gone, but a core group of us remains. This year we celebrated the Christmas Season by having our first "Artist Made Ornament Exchange."
The variety of ornaments was amazing, everything from collaged hearts bedazzled with glitter, felted creatures, origami cranes, folded book stars, collaged brie boxes with butterflies, fabric/felt folk symbols, and painted wood scraps. We drew numbers for who would go first and went around the pile of wrapped ornaments picking in turn. Once we were done picking, we took turns opening each set of artist ornaments at a time.
" Ohhhs and Ahhhhs" cooed all around the table as we opened each one. Everyone's face was bright with joy, surprise and delight. The Christmas Season has become steeped in commercial goods for many people but not during this event. It was such a pleasure to give and receive beautifully handcrafted objects made by each other. My " Visions of Sugar Plums" are of one day having a Christmas Tree covered from top to bottom with only handmade ornaments of my friends and family. The Collective Muse's Artist Made Ornament Exchange is sure to become our annual tradition. I hope you create this tradition in your life too! Occupy Christmas!

Brand New Course - Saturday Course
Hello!
I am Camilla Spadafino, the art teacher at Lockeland Design Center, a k-4 Metro School in East Nashville. I have also been teaching an arts methods class for future teachers at Vanderbilt University. I have taught the class at Vanderbilt for two semesters and have been so inspired and amazed by that experience that I would like to continue the spirit of that class by working with a small group of children, hopefully, from the East Nashville community.
My grandmother was the piano teacher in her small town of Milan, TN. Not only was she able to share her love of music with young people but formed life long friendships with them. I loved it when these young people who eventually grew up, went to college, and moved on with their adult lives still came back to Milan and made a purposeful stop at my grandmother's home. I hope to bring that same warm th of experience through teaching art in my community.
The course I am offering is a Saturday course and is designed for students grades 4-8. I am also interested in working with high school students on more individualized projects and portfolio development. “Making Creativity the Norm”

Goals for the (grade 4- 8) students in this course are:
1. Students will learn and practice techniques in mixed media art including: watercolor painting, acrylic painting, collage, sculpture, and drawing
2. Students will stay connected to the supportive online community we will create as part of this course as students continue their journey into “Making Creativity the Norm” in their lives
3. Students will learn how to and then continue to respond in their visual journals with specific teacher led assignments along with their own creations between workshops and beyond
4. Students will become familiar with notable contemporary artists, influential artists from history, and working artists from our community. Students will demonstrate their exposure to these artists by showing examples of their influences in their work
5. Students will be supported in developing an understanding of creativity and the essential need for it to be a fully integrated part of their learning and life
Course Description:
This course is designed to acquaint students grades 4-8 in the art of visual journaling as a means of “Making Creativity the Norm” in their lives. The course is open for up to 10 students in grades 4-8 who are interested in art and would like to be a part of building a supportive art community with course participants and their families.
The course includes eight, three hour workshops each having a unique focus on various art mediums and artist. The workshops are three hours long and will be held on Saturdays (one per month) during the months of August, September, October, November, January, February, March and April.(calendar coming soon) The workshops will be held at Camilla Spadafino’s home: 1413 Shelton Ave. Nashville, TN 37216. Students will be given specific assignments to be completed between workshops. The assignments will include projects to be completed in and out of their visual journals, sharing and responding to an online community to be used only by participants in this course and their families, specific and self-directed art museum visits and other field experiences (one required field experience per month)
This course is about the PROCESS of making art and becoming more creative – not the PRODUCT that students will be creating. Although students will be learning specific art skills as part of their personal creative process it will be the internal work that they are doing that is the focus of this course and not a goal “how things look” to others.
Suggested reading for parents:
A Whole New Mind by, Daniel Pink
A large part of my inspiration for this course comes from this book. Parents are encouraged to read it as a means of supporting their child in “Making Creativity the Norm.” Other readings will be shared with parents via email throughout the course.
Art Supplies and Materials:
All materials needed during the workshops, including the journals, will be provided to the students at no extra charge. Suggested Home Based Supply Kits are available for purchase at a slightly lower cost than should you purchase them yourself. You may have many of the supplies on hand already and it is completely your choice to purchase the Suggested Home Based Supply Kits, use what you have already on hand at home, or supplement with the below suggested list:
gesso
acrylic paint set
Yes Paste or UHO glue sticks
new Fiskars scissors
watercolor paint set
multipurpose brushes
a variety of design markers
variety of interesting papers
Suggested Home Based Supply Kits are optional and available for purchase through Camilla at the cost of the supplies to her. The kits will average about $125.00 depending on the number of students who wish to purchase one.

This fee includes:
Eight 3 hour workshops
Materials used during workshops
Online community supervised by Camilla
Teacher led monthly assignments with student accountability in workshop time

Thank you! East Nashville values children, art and creativity!
East Nashville has spoken with its support for the "Story of Heores Art Show and Sale" and it has said: East Nashville values children, creativity and art.
Thank you for supporting Lockeland Design Center's "Story of Heroes Art Show and Sale." There is a list a mile long of helping hands to thank starting with Dan Heller of Riverside Village, Sip, The Music School, Mitchell's Deli, and Wantanbe for hosting our event. The Art Show would most certainly not have happened this year without ART HERO and all around fabulous WONDER WOMAN, Michelle Sharp. There was also a team of incredible guest artist who spent countless hours in and out of the classroom working with the children and working on their own beautiful art that you will see below this post. Many hands helped to display the children's art and prepare it for the show. I fear listing each name because there were many and I don't want to leave anyone out. From the parents who manned the auction table to AmyRidings who organized all the bid sheets to the bidders who were both parents and community members- THANK YOU!!
A huge THANK YOU also goes out to each and every person and child who came out in attendance for the art show! It was magical to have Justin Lett of Eden's Gate heading up a team with the art teacher from Litton and all her wonderful students painting a Hero Mural. The crowd and the Litton Mural Painters were just a fantastic as the art on the walls, if not more so. Thank you all for showing up and being a part of a magical night filled with Art Super Power Energy!
Thank you to all the parents who have already sent in their $10.oo to purchase their children's art and also to those of you who are in the process of doing so. Thank you for all the donations that are coming in with that $10.oo purchase fee and to all those who made donations on the night of the Art Show. Thank you also to those who have purchased the HERO MUGs!
It feels so wonderful to be the art teacher at Lockeland Design Center because of all the marvelous people who support the arts for children in East Nashville. I am so proud of all the guest artist/ art heroes who worked with our children this year. Each and every guest artist/ art hero was a parent from Lockeland. This says a great deal about us as a community. East Nashville has spoken with its support for the "Story of Heroes Art Show and Sale" and it has said: EAST NASHVILLE VALUES OUR CHILDREN, CREATIVITY, AND ART!!! Our community has said this through its actions and its gifts.
