Guest Artist: Herb Williams, Ms. Boles' 1st Grade Class

"Dream Green Silhouette Portraits" Herb Williams dreamed up a beautiful silhouette project for Ms. Boles' first grade class.  First he took to photos of each child, downloaded and printed them in black and white.  One of the photos was a forward facing view and the other was a profile. Herb layered the photos on a light box until he found the right juxtoposed form of the two shots. He merged the profile and front facing portraits together and traced one on top of the other with a pencil.  An exacto knife was used to cut the precise lines and the two pieces came together with a child created watercolor background was used to emphasize the beauty of the design.

The children learned about a monocrohmatic color scheme and experimented with layers of color to make their favorite color of green.  While their water color wash was still wet, they sprinkled salt on it.  When the salt dried the children were delighted to brush it away and see the white "sparkles" that were left behind when the salt absorbed the paint.  One of these water colors was used for the background of the photography portraits, and the other was used to create a silhoutte that was mounted on a black background.

"Oh! Daddy! Please STAY!!"
